Renovation of the duplex unit on the ground and basement levels of two adjacent 20th Century buildings joined in the 1980s. The design was a concerted effort to integrate the minimally-connected spaces into a visually and functionally cohesive unit.
With extensive engineering and skillful demolition, openings were introduced into the masonry demising wall on the ground level that unified the living and dining areas on the upper level and expanded the view east to the split-level terrace and East River beyond. A new floating stair in an oversized opening visually connects the two levels to bring unity to the whole that was missing from its earlier unification.
